reasons for which everything is coming up roses

#1: i love my bible study. the girls and the content, like how it runs and stuff.

#2: afterwards, we get to go over to a.g.o. for worship nights!

#3: belair is awesome and everybody give you hugs.

#4: we have a skinny mirror in our apartment so every day when i leave for class i think i look SO hot... which i do...

#5: i am a computer programming prodigy. for reals. i have an innate ability or something! my t.a. doesn't think so, but i know it's true...

#6: i'm taking a class called "japanese brush painting"!!!!

yeah it is all that awesome. it makes up for the first 2 weeks of school, which were unreal (in a bad way).

"Ego Tripping at the Gates of Hell" (The Flaming Lips)

I was waiting on a moment
but the moment never came
all the billion other moments
were just slipping on away

I must have been tripping
(were just slipping on away)
just ego tripping

I was wanting you to love me
but your love it never came
all the other love around me
was just wasting on away

I must have been tripping
(was just wasting on away)
just ego tripping

am i the only one who thinks this song, especially the title, is incredibly profound? i love it.

mr. mitchell

as many of you know, a balloon (like, the ones you tie and make animals with) can look very phallic. we did a demonstration in chem in which the temperature of the balloon decreased, leading to a decrease in volume. our prof, foolishly, refererenced this as "shrinkage". and we all giggled.

then, while discussing the Gay-Lussac experiment (also has to go with gas volume), some guy behind me goes "huh-huh... GAY."

i tell ya... that engineering gender ratio...

JOHN LOCKE (for fun and profit)

they only govern by the consent of the governed... WHAT?

To keity@conquesthousing.com
Subject: Reminders about Shrine Events
Hi Keity,

My name is Lindy, I'm a tenant in Habitat Soo Zee. As you obviously know, some of the Conquest buildings are directly across from or very near to the Shrine Auditorium. This means that when events are going on at the Shrine, tenants at many of these locations are unable to leave or enter their apartment buildings via car, because many streets (today- 32nd, Shrine, and Royal) are blocked off.

However, it is very difficult for tenants to know exactly when and which streets will be blocked off. Is there any way for Conquest to obtain this information and inform tenants about these street closings? I know that USC university housing puts up flyers in their buildings to remind students about Shrine events, so it can be done!

Thank you very much,

[me]

To rmesger@lippingroup.com
Subject: Informing Shrine Neighbors about the Emmy Awards
Hi Lippin Group,

My name is Lindy, I'm a student at USC. I live in an apartment across the street from the Shrine Auditorium, and was extremely inconvenienced today when I was unable to leave my apartment. All of the streets around my apartment (parts of 32nd, Royal, Shrine) have been blocked off because of the awards tonight. I understand that blocking off streets is the only way to let the Awards run smoothly, but those affected by these street closings need to have prior knowledge.

Luckily for you, many of the buildings affected by the street closings are owned either by USC Housing or Conquest Housing (www.conquesthousing.com)- it may be easier to contact those managements directly who in turn can inform their tenants. You could also have a representative walk around to the different houses/apartments to let us know. And of course, you could rent all of us free limos for next weekend so we are able to run errands and see friends even though we can't get out of our respective garages.

Of course, this weekend is just a practice for us for next weekend when the full-blown Emmy Awards happen. We will be better prepared next Sunday, and hopefully we will be better informed.

Thank you very much.

[me]

I'm such a badass. for reals.

shrine

they're filming something for the emmy's. cool

32ND, SHRINE, AND ROYAL ARE COMPLETELY BLOCKED OFF. NOT COOL.

no one can get in or out. i mean, i can on foot. but cars? what would we have done if we had to drive rachel and her friends to the train station?

I'm sending Conquest Housing a strongly (but constructively!) worded email. Then, when I'm feeling assertive, I'll do some m.s. and feel completely stupid.

longing for ellendale

dearest maddy and carly (and joe and caitlin, too):

I do want to come to your apartment. I want to grace the sidewalks of ellendale. I do. promise. but, given the current situation, any free time is spent catching up on work. which, if all goes according to plan, I will all be caught up on by the beginning of next week (i.e. I study and read and write all this weekend).

Now, I already promised my friend in calc that we'd go to disneyland when i was all caught up with my work. BUT I WILL COME TO ELLENDALE FIRST!! what say you about... hmm... monday is ultimate, tuesday is bible study, wednesday is belair, thursday is womens practice- NEXT FRIDAY?

you see how it is? life is hard. but i will escape somehow and come to ellendale. PROMISE. PINKY SWEAR.

love and kisses,
me

dr. pepper

last night I was walking home. it was around 10, I was taking jefferson (to shrine... to 32nd... whatever). so, not the safest way, but i was like, "it's only 10 p.m. whatever"

THEN some guy drives up next to me and he was like, "need a ride baby doll?" AND I HONESTLY DID NOT KNOW WHAT TO SAY.

which is wierd. i think normally i'd be like, "no thank you, please leave me alone" and hope he isn't armed or something.

but last night, i wanted to be like, "didn't you get the memo? i'm a frumpy engineering girl now! totally out of your league. immune to your crap advances! leave me and my chem book be." I think I should be untouchable, as horny late night drive-by pickups go.

nacimiento

#1: i am uncool. plain and simple. i realized that i am a frumpy engineering girl. and... i'm not too bothered by it. i guess the truth does set you free. but don't worry, i'll still shower and stuff

#2: since i have 2 weeks of school to make up... I have 5 chapters of chem to read, 3 of computer science (but don't let that fool you- it's still 100 pages), 6 chapters fo my broadway musical class. and i'm always behind in math. i had a little paper due today, i was graciously excused from the first problem set and quiz in chem (thank you prof goo!!), and my first program is due on friday. AGH!

and, of course, my bike was stolen. which was like this evil cherry on top of my evil 2 weeks sundae. i saw kacie the day my bike was stolen and she was like, "hi lindy!" and i started crying. true story. then i failed a math quiz. also a true story.

i feel like job... except i'm definitely failing.

this is a pretty downer post... but i can't think of anything good that's happened lately. except a new pair of jeans. i like them.

it's all about m.e.

some things are coming together, and others are falling apart. or rather, rearranging themselves beyond recognition.

and all i have to keep me company are my roommate's godforsaken TURTLES. actually, they're small and don't cause trouble. i don't know what my problem is.

my problem is that i'm switching into mechanical engineering and my whole class schedule is jacked... and may necessitate my dropping my russian art class, which i ADORE!! at least i can keep japanese brush painting.

i wish i weren't bound by time.

bleh

i'm here. my classes are all wonderful. but too much is going on for me to actually post. and i've forgotten so much, too.

right now i'm listening to kelly clarkson on my roommate's computer because mine is m.i.a. and when they told me 3-5 days... that means IN ADDITION to the 3-5 day waiting period for them to take a look at it. and they're backlogged. ugh.

when mr. puckers is back... well, i'd like to say that i'll update or whatever. but... UNLIKELY.

in other news, we have a mirror in our living room and i was like, "wow! i definitely lost weight!" so after i worked out i weighed myself.... yeah that mirror is a skinny mirror. le sigh. i love you, kelly clarkson.

"Language or the Kiss" (Indigo Girls)

I don't know if it was real or in a dream
lately waking up I'm not sure where I've been
There was a table set for six and five were there
I stood outside and kept my eyes upon that empty chair

And there was steam on the windows from the kitchen
laughter like a language I once spoke with ease
and I'm made mute by the virtue of decision
I choose most of your life goes on without me

Oh the fear I've known
that I might reap the praise of strangers
and end up on my own
all I'd sown was a song
but maybe I was wrong

I said to you the one gift which I'd adore
unwrap a package of the next 10 years unfolding
but you told me if I had my way I'd be bored
right then I knew I loved you best born of your scolding

When we last talked we were lying on our backs
looking up at the sky through the ceiling
I used to lie like that alone out on the driveway
trying to read the greek upon the starts
the alphabet of feeling

Oh I knew back then
there was a calling that said if joy, then pain
the sound of the voice these years later
is still the same

I am alone in a hotel room tonight
I squeeze the sky out, but there's not a star appears
begin my studies with this paper and this pencil
and I'm working through the grammar of my fears

Mercy, what I won't give
to have the things that mean the most
not to mean the things I miss
unforgiving, the choice still is
the language or the kiss

last night i slept outside and still didn't conquer my fear of the backyard.

wednesday: eric observes that lindy is a little on edge, and asks why. lindy replies, "i'm not on edge!" eric wins.

thursday: after finding out her drivers license is expired (THANKS FOR NOT SENDING ME A NOTE YOU CRETANS!!), lindy gets extra security screening at s.j.c... only to find that her flight to l.a.x. has been canceled. lindy actually cries. though few, the tears were there (and so were the curious onlookers)

friday: while grocery shopping for her grandmother, lindy becomes suddenly and unbearably bloated while perusing the frozen food aisle.

black cadillacs

i got an email from jessalyn, my roomie who's already moved in (our lease started monday!)

"...Also, the bedrooms dont have lights in them, they just have a random light switch. So make sure you have a lamp for your bedroom. The kitchen/dining room is well lit, and I may go ahead and pick up a light for the livingroom. Our apartment is ghetto, but it is ours and therefore is AWESOME..."

i would like to take this opportunity to say: WORD UP, JESSALYN.

p.s. good thing charlotte told me freshman year to get a lamp to open up the room

hard decision

so... there is a cute italian restaurant in downtown menlo park. and every time we (summer staff) pass it we're like, "oh let's go there!"

tomorrow... WE ARE GOING THERE. and one thing led to another and....

TONY AND ERIC WILL WEAR SUITS TOMORROW... IF I DRESS UP, TOO.

and they're like, "oh a suit- it's so uncomfortable, it's so hot!" blah blah. they're expecting me to wear like a PROM DRESS and i'm like, "strapless bra, bitches, you got nothing on me". i will say that i was the one to suggest we all dress up, even though it's not all that dressy of a place. but... a prom dress... for lunch in menlo park? (my choices are: the black and white dress i wore to father-daughter dress junior year, and the pink and black one i wore at senior prom)

we were driving today, and they suggested the suits-promish dress idea, and i was like, "oh... i don't know..." and they both looked at me and they were like, "TWO GUYS IN SUITS!!!" man, that really got to me. but i'm just not sure. any ideas?

i'm hoping to get away with my maroon with white embroidery dress.

okay the first dress. except, it's only black and white (change all the light pink to black). and, it's all black on the back side. and... I'M NOT A WAIF.

okay, and dress 2: except, turn the black to pink, and the white to black. and... i'm not as hippy as her, so the contrasts around the waist aren't as... striking. and, again, NOT A WAIF.

dress 3: yay plus size models!! this is a pretty accurate picture of what i look like in it.

oh, and please let me know a.s.a.p... and before 7:45 a.m. when i leave for work (with dresses in hand/car!). or call me any time before lunch. i'm open to suggestion/small bribery.

wednesday night awesomeness

it happened in this order:

gym
shower
make grocery list
put mousse i never use in my hair
grocery shopping: peaches 1/2 off... life cereal buy one get one free...
friend i see outside safeway says my hair smells good
i listen to killers cd loudly while putting away groceries and cleaning the kitchen
johnny o calls to see if i want to throw tonight- WITH MY NEW LIGHT UP DISC!! YAY!!!

the only way this night could get better would be if... john hadn't just come home and turned off my music so he can watch t.v. *le sigh*

sanctuary

moment of clarity. have to write (type) it down before i go to sleep.

it wasn't a revelation. it was more actually believing what i know to be true: that god will take care of me and that he has a plan for me. and that i CAN wait in/for/preposition the lord and he knows how to take care of me.

and believing that. and carrying it out. and wondering if this is just another feeling i can't hold onto... if i can prolong it... somehow make it stay. because this peace- which is familiar in so many ways, but the way my life's been going it's pretty new and strange- this peace needs to stay. it feels good. any ideas?

more lies from john david

"your phone is just in a purse all the time! i have a man's phone! in the pocket! braving the elements!"
"shut up- you just drop yours all the time."
"whatever! my phone has to fight to the death! on top of a mountain! during a lightning storm!"

john tries to explain why his phone is so jacked up.

vigilante justice with lindy

lindy: thomas, bathe! or at least change your clothes! (i dressed him on tuesday, because it was my birthday, and he still has the same clothes on)

thomas: can i use your bathroom?

lindy: okay (anything to further his hygiene!!)

later that night...

lindy walks into her bathroom after the gym, all ready to take a shower, only to find (IN HORROR!) that thomas got a haircut earlier that day (why didn't she notice??). 2 new additions to lindy's bathtub: a huge ring, THOMAS' NASTY HAIR.

so she got out her hazmat suit and went to work. (i.e. put the water on super hot and washed it all down the drain). blech.

but, in the end, the marginal benefit of thomas' bathing outweighs the marginal cost of my cleaning my own bathtub before i use it. i won't have to vigilante, i guess, but stay on the lookout.

muu muu

we popped my birthday balloons
and sucked the helium
and spoke in funny voices

fun times with the 10-year-old

in other news, i met a guy named paul today who had a shirt with a camaro-ish car on it (as if i know anything about cars... it's a car. it was on the shirt.) and it said, "my other ride is your mother." hehe methinks, until i realize paul is incredibly tall and skinny, and a total nerd. but hey, whatever butters his muffin. am i right or am i right? EXACTLY. godspeed, paul, godspeed.

day camp: day five

in all honesty, i don't know how i'm not dead right now. i was at work this morning at 7, and just now got back from the counselor party after party (bowling!!). work. all day. nonstop.

tony and i estimate this as at least a 70 hour work week, if not 80 hours. and, of course, i'm not paid by the hour. so... it's just the same as my usual 40 hour week. GRRRRREAT!

i want summer to go on forever.

day camp: day two

i meant to mention yesterday our bus driver.

WHOA MOMENTARY LOSS OF COHESION.

i meant to mention our bus driver in yesterday's post. whew. he told us that if we stuck any part of our bodies out of the window, any tree branch or passing whatever could take off that appendage (and i quote) "like a sharp knife through soft butter." The kids didn't respond, but I was even afraid to put my head near the window, much less to lean out of it, to tell eric that my walkie-talkie was running out of batteries. *shudder*... *soft butter*

today we went to the exploratorium, and i hung out at the staff station. whoa nelly.

day camp: day one and a half

"Theme From Pinata" (Bright Eyes)

I wish I had a parachute
'cause I'm falling fast for you
I can see the ground approaching
but I'm not sure what to do
I feel like a pinata
won't you take a swing at me
If you could just crack the shell open
I think inside you would find something sweet

I heard you like a hunter now
your footsteps in the leaves
And I would gladly leave my hiding place
yes I'm hoping to be seen
So let your arrow fly and sing
I'm well within your aim
Lay your traps for a thousand miles
please don't let me escape

Winter came to Omaha
and left us looking like a bride
A million perfect snowflakes now
and no two are alike
So it's hard for me to imagine
the flaws in this design
I know debris covers everything
but still I am in love with this life

and they say, "please call back. our office hours are from 9-5 Monday thru Friday"

argh. why do i agonize so much over my schedule.

foosa

wildhorse:

first off, it was a young life camp in oregon that our church used for its high school camp. it wasn't for ultimate, though i did play ultimate there. so no, kate, i didn't see scouter.

and speaking of ultimate... i'm thinking of taking this next semester off. i need a christian community. and ultimate practices when crusade, etc. etc. meet. it's not as if i can't have both a straong christian community and ultimate- it's just that they take the same time slots. finding that community needs to be my priority. don't get me wrong- i love my team. and i love my friends. i love hanging out with them and don't think i'm "wasting my time" or something like that. but i do think i'm settling for less than what I truly want. being with mppc this past week- i really thrived. everyone i met was genuine, and of my same faith. I don't realize how important that is to me until I get back to my mppc community.

that was one of my decisions i made at camp. christian community= priority. and somehow, i gotta find a ride to bel-air. I WILL DO IT. AND GOD WILL HELP ME.

oh yeah, and speaking of God... if you haven't noticed, i'm anxious a lot about the future and what i'm going to major in/do/whatever. then eventually i remember that God has a plan for me and i can rest in that. but let's be honest here- i'm still anxious. and i don't think that'll stop. i'm too preoccupied with finding the PERFECT major for me and the PERFECT fit for a job, etc. etc. i even look for the PERFECT pants when i go shopping- which explains why i have none currently.

looking for the absolute best burns me out, and i question if "perfect" things really exist. doesn't god even annoy me some times? if i'm not perfect, I don't expect other things to be. so i may put myself on some endless search for what doesn't exist.

a while back charley gave a talk at sanctuary, and one of the things he said was this: Hebrew "good" is better than Greek "perfect"

that is to say, when god created the world and said it was "good", that's better than when paul, in the new testament, explains a "perfect" christian community. good is defined, at least here, as in tune with God. what god wants. lots of things i can do now are good. brush my teeth and go to bed, read, journal, whatever. i think as long as God can bless it, it's good. that's my rule of thumb.

but "perfect"- it's making different degrees of 'good'. so- right now- should i brush my teeth? read? journal? my life is like that- but on a bigger scale. and i worry about which will satisfy me most- and doesn't god have a preference? shouldn't his 'plan' include everything?

so, of course, i just freak out and am anxious all over again. i don't see that all my paths can be "good" and maybe there isn't a "perfect" one. so now i have that figured out- how do i apply it practically?

*shazam* stop worrying!

no. it can't work that way. i don't know how i'm going to apply what i'm figuring out. this truth should make me stop being so anxious about the future. in the end, as long as i can do good, whatever i do can be made 'perfect' in God, so i shouldn't worry. yeah, circular reasoning. oh well it's past my bed time anyhow.

Whether you turn to the right or to the left, your ears will hear a voice behind you, saying, "This is the way; walk in it." Isaiah 30:21

ok i gotta post more about wildhorse- but first! here's a wierd dream i had!

i got my leg amputated. but i couldn't exactly see that, my leg seemed to still be there, but i knew it had been amputated under the knee. there was a big line where it had been cut. so i was walking and driving around in this crazy funk mood because i was like, "i just lost my leg! and no one can see that!" and i was missing my leg and stuff. and driving my little brother different places. and i finally saw joe and he was like, "are you alright? is something wrong?" and i was like, "nothing."

joe is a good friend even in my dreams. and i'm still unwilling to talk about stuff in my dreams.

tony

nothing really happens in my life really, but i have met someone really cool! he works with me, his name is tony. i've known him for a while b/c he was a day camp counselor with me a few summers ago, but working with him is AWESOME.

first off, he won a car on 'the price is right', which automatically propels him to the category of perpetually awesome.

i'll share a story (doesn't involve the car): so we were driving to the oasis in joe's car today (me, katie, joe, tony, ben, eric- all interns with me), and we were passing all the restaurant on santa cruz ave. deciding where we could go for another lunch some time. sayeth tony:

"oooh, bistro vida. what's that?"
"oh it's really good."
"we should get something there some time!"
"it's really expensive."
"we should split something there some time!"

i was like, "YOU ARE SO COOL!" but not out loud. i just think he rocks- as do the rest of my coworkers. hehe, i said 'coworkers'... i also ordered something from the bar today at the O! ok so it was a martinelli's... that's still from the bar! lindy= rebel.

ugh

i was like, "oh well i'm really tired from mini day camp and i'm feeling like crap- tonight would be a good night to go to bed early"

BUT then i remembered we were going out for dinner, because it's my dad's birthday. I told him he should reject the wine after he tasted it at the table- you know, just because it's his birthday. he wasn't too into that.

BUT then some random friends came with us. i had never met these people before!! and, bloated as i was, i had to make a nice first impression

we left for dinner at 6:30
we came home around 9
they finally left at 10:45

... and somehow i lived to tell the tale...

where do i sign?

so i hate being a girl.

yesterday i went shopping. and, prudently, it soon turned to bra shopping. i was out for, oh, 2 and a half hours. and how many bras did i buy? ZERO. none. i couldn't find one bra i liked. i put them on, jumped and moved all around the dressing room, and they all failed. the only thing i DID buy, facewash from body shop, i left in victoria's secret.

speaking of face wash, i'm breaking out like crazy. why, you ask? because it's the first day of my period, which means i'm also bloated like a huge hippo. I'm bustin out of my mini day camp shirt. After camp today, I was sooo hungry- but i was so bloated! it was wierd and really sucked. because i knew i should eat something, but i felt like i was going to burst/die.

so i went to the goose with my dad for his birthday... afterwards i worked out hoping the bloating would go away. no sirree. working out only gets rid of cramps. bloated treadmilling sucks.

grr... no more being a girl. i'm putting my ovaries up for sale. (ok that was gross- but seriously. i'm in such a foul mood.)

i'm gonna shower and go back to hillsdale to retreive my facewash. OH WAIT. john took the car. so i'm stuck. with just my cramps to keep me company. grrrrrr.

[my dad]: well... are you bigger?
[lauren]: ... yes
[my dad]: well... are you going to push them off or not?

full contact tackle shuffleboard

and then i want to work at the womens museum
so i don't want to go to usc anymore- i don't like it at all
or maybe i'll study education
and gender studies
and economics
and i wish there weren't poverty and discrimination against women
or any bad things in the world
so i should study economics and fix everything
but change starts small
which is why i'm in children's ministries in the first place
because they are small
but god is big.

and i want to do everthing!
i want to do it all!
i want to study everything and be everything
i want to wear sweats every day
AND business suits with heels every day
and be all on my own and have a family and friends
i want to be in the big time making real tangible changes
and influencing interest rates
but i want to be small

i guess in the end i just want to be important.
and i can't decide for myself what is the most important
or what is best for me to do
because i get so easily confused.

and then eventually i remember that god has a plan for me
and i have to trust that it's a good one.
but it can take me a long time to remember that
so in the mean time i freak out and start filling out transfer applications
or get intimidated by the world and eat some otter pops
and i'm even intimidated by the blue otter pops

le sigh. god has a plan for me. but i wish i knew what it was. then it would be easier for me to trust he's going to be good to me and take care of me. i don't like fending for myself in the world, it sucks and is overwhelming. but i'm glad i remembered he has a plan for me. i can leave my class schedule alone now and watch reno 911.

yeah

i had a crazy dream last night. even crazier is that i remembered it, i don't tend to do that.

anyhow, we (i was the only person i recognized in my dream) were in a classroom discussing greek vs. english grammar. and this one guy was SO smart and taking all my answers. i, of course, was like, "hubba hubba!!" what a wierd dream...

what an accurate dream...

m.i.t.

i don't have anything to say. i did have things to say, but i can't remember them now. but i do have a funny calculus joke!!! unfortunately, it would be a little hard to tell on the blog. so next time you see me (and have brushed up on your liebnitz notation!!) ask me and i'll tell you.

and for the record, i did get it from my cousin who goes to m.i.t. (and is hence really smart), who is currently living in SEATTLE for the summer (and is hence really cool).

clark

another exciting development in the world of LINDY!

...changed my classes again...

core 101
econ 340
math 125
itp 101x (an econ requirement... ick nerds)
JAPANESE F-ING BRUSHPAINTING!

i didn't realize itp is a 4 unit course... so i can only take one econ class. i did consider dropping my last class, adding an econ class, and taking 2o units. but, of course, masochism is so over-rated, mais non? mais-be. (ok that was a stretch- deal with it). i could do it. who knows. i'm soooo unpredictable!

apple

so i think i got rid of the virus... but i do get some random pop-ups now. and they correspond to the websites i'm visiting (like, all this online school stuff comes up if i'm on the usc website...) so it's obviously spyware. I HATE MEAN PEOPLE WHO WANT TO MISUSE MY COMPUTER!!!

i thought i should take a harder class load this semester. so i dropped my history of jazz class (my diversity requirement, i'll take care of it some spring semester) so i can take another econ class (economics of less developed countries!!), and changed a macro class to a micro one.

not that any of this matters to you- but i'm excited. and i can always bail and take the easier classes again! yeah, i need to get a life. too bad that conflicts with my working 8-5 and on weekends thing...

pout

i am so sorry to everyone ever.

i am sorry if you got random stupid IMs last night from me. my computer has a virus, and I left it on last night.

I am really sorry and until i get this figured out I'm not going to use my computer or anything. which makes me sad.

I'm also really sorry if you clicked on any of those links or anything... because... that means you probably have the virus, too.

again, i'm sorry. see you later.

squirrel

today i woke up and went to the kitchen for breakfast. upon my arrival, my dad and little brothers looked up from the table.

"How about we pierce her ears?" He clicked the staple remover in his hand fiercely. "Double piercing, eh? How about that?"

And people ask me why I don't mind going to work at 8 a.m....

circle up

today i had a great idea. or at least, i think it was great. a lot of my work is doing tasks in the same room (unloading boxes, sorting the contents of those boxes, reloading those boxes, doing it all again next week). And next to that room is the children's library. what is one of the sections in the library, you ask... CD'S! so i decided this summer we (meaning myself and those lucky interns with me) will listen to all those cd's. we started with A... audio adrenaline.

and now i understand why christian music has the stigma that it does.

not even kidding: "too cool for sunday school", "i ain't clowning around (no more with god)", "jesus and the california kid"

ode to livejournal

oh livejournal... YOU SUCK. you didn't show any of my friend's posts until i finally went to my "friends" page and saw everything i had been missing. and yes, i did miss a lot.

and also realized that i have a little life that i lead. i get up at 7 and am at work by 8. i normally eat lunch around 12:30. sometimes brooke and i throw (a frisbee) at the park. i staple and count and copy and sort and get ready for the weekend in children's ministry. i leave work at 5 and am home by 7 after i go to the gym. i shower (sometimes...), eat dinner, read for a while, and go to bed. hopefully by 11.

no stanford parties. no ANY parties. today, my biggest adventure was getting maps from aaa.

but hey- this weekend i'm going to oregon for college nationals!! hooray!! yeah, this blog is pretty boring.

sorry

sorry about that last post. i was angry and prone to swearing. and i wore pants today.

i also ate chocolate all day today. no, seriously. in many different forms, of course, but chocolate nonetheless. but it was fitting for a start-of-period day. ugh i hate menstruation.

this blog is now so pg-13 (although i think if you use the f-word twice, it merits an r rating. pg... 15?)

warning: rant ahead

ok so my mom's like, "you shouldn't look casual at work"

HELLO I AM WORKING AT A CHURCH. AS A SUMMER AND COLLEGE INTERN. OF COURSE I SHOULD LOOK CASUAL!

"i don't think you should wear shorts"

FUCK YOU. YOU KNOW IF I WERE SKINNIER SHE WOULDN'T SAY THAT.

I'M NOT GOING TO WEAR SKIRTS AND SLACKS WHILE IT'S SO HOT AND I'M WORKING ALL DAY.

what am i supposed to do? ask one of the full-time staffers? they know i don't dress like a slut, and they know that i do dress for weekends accordingly. so i should just stay on the safe side and burn up all day? NO.

one solution: mom takes me shopping and she buys my "acceptable" clothes.

FUCK THAT.

i think that's the first time i've sworn on this blog. hm.

piece de resistance

I had to be at church at 7:30 to work, got off around 1, then had a party at my house for new neighbors and had to host, etc. etc. exhausted, i took a short nap before waking up at 6:30 to go to sanctuary.

so i woke up and got some sweats from the floor... and my socks and shoes i'd been wearing earlier... and a random teeshirt and long-sleeved shirt, also from the floor. i'm sure they've been washed sometime in the last two weeks, but just in case, i got my febreze out from my closet.

WHO FEBREZES THEMSELF? HONESTLY!

lindy does...

mr. puckers has the flu

i spent the better part of today trying to fix my speakers. now i realize i need to get rid of all the spyware and crap on it.

so i thought: wouldn't it be great if there were a day spa/computer spa? seriously. you flush out all YOUR toxins and stuff while smart people get rid of all the crap in the computer. i'm serious here! you're like, "i'm getting a massage... and my computer will stop making wierd sounds while i'm not even using it... ahh bliss."

i think that would be great. but now i have to fold clothes. i start work tomorrow! yay!

"I Am a Rock" (Simon and Garfunkel)

A winter’s day
In a deep and dark december;
I am alone,
Gazing from my window to the streets below
On a freshly fallen silent shroud of snow.
I am a rock,
I am an island.

I’ve built walls,
A fortress deep and mighty,
That none may penetrate.
I have no need of friendship; friendship causes pain.
It’s laughter and it’s loving I disdain.
I am a rock,
I am an island.

Don’t talk of love,
But I’ve heard the word before;
It’s sleeping in my memory.
I won’t disturb the slumber of feelings that have died.
If I never loved I never would have cried.
I am a rock,
I am an island.

I have my books
And my poetry to protect me;
I am shielded in my armor,
Hiding in my room, safe within my womb.
I touch no one and no one touches me.
I am a rock,
I am an island.

And a rock feels no pain;
And an island never cries.

total eclipse of the heart

since i've been gone:

dad had the driveway repaved
greg got taller (i know, I KNOW!)
thomas got baseball trading cards- of himself!!
my mom got a 5-cd collection, "Ultimate Love Songs"

HOLY. CRAP. YES.

i got my hair "fixed" today. i don't think it looks better, the front is still all bleachy. dying parts of it pink was the worst decision i've made in a long time, probably because of the longevity of the consequences.

I mean, it's hard to go to a hairdresser and be like, "i'm paying you $110 to fix it so i can put my hair in a ponytail everyday. you work hard and make it look gorgeous so i can ignore my hair. perrrrfect." and, of course, he's like, "so, where do you part your hair?"... and i can never be honest with my hairdresser! i feel bad knowing he's doing all this work so i can have a ponytail i don't worry about every day.

all i want is for my hair to go back to normal... but it's still bleached in unfortunate areas... AHHH!!! gosh darn you venus for bleaching my hair before pinking it! gosh darn you lindy for thinking you could handle these decisions on your own!

punny

i'm dorsal.

(get it? get it? i'm BACK. oh hahaha)

and now i have to unpack.

stonehead

yeah, so apparently i don't have any emotions or really any soul to speak of.

i guess i'll miss all you guys this summer... and i just don't know it yet... an "i told you so" will definitely be in order. but for now i'll pack and sing along to my music and remind myself that i'll see you all next fall.

horrible speller though he is,

i love joe. and he knows just what to say without my saying anything, or even talking to him at all in a week. I LOVE JOE I LOVE JOE I LOVE JOE I LOVE JOE. and now the whole world (read: blog) knows it.

i finally asked my dad today why i don't have a godmother, or any godparent actually. as suspected, he has no good reason. i simply reminded him that my birthday's coming up in july, which i believe gives him ample time to oragnize a godparent of some sort for me. I don't even know what exactly a godparent is- but i really really want one!!!

I remind myself of Lady Bracknell when she tells jack to find himself a parent of some kind because her daughter will not form an alliance with a handbag, marry into a cloakroom!! (or something like that, oh oscar wilde you fox).

Maybe I should put an ad in the paper, some sort of classified.

Female, 18 (almost 19!) years of age seeks responsible, preferably affluent godparent. Godmother preferred, but not necessary. Skills: buy me presents, be cool like that, procure some definition of a godparent and fulfill that role. Send in resume with picture and sample present for me. Dirty old men need not apply.

fitch bactor

i studied for macro this morning with a guy in the class who used to be on the ultimate team. and i'm sure he's nice and everything... but he could not possibly be more inept!!! i was so frustrated!! it took so much time for every little thing that i really didn't think we'd get around to going over everything we planned to.

and i was being a total bitch. honestly. i felt bad about it-- then i remembered i'm right on the verge of an A-, so i really need to do well on this final!! but then, it was apparent that we both knew i was being a bitch, so i tried to lighten it up some. but it was still like, "sorry, you're dumb and i'm being a bitch"- AWKWARD.

one time i was like, "ok you take this question" (i actually did that several times, i'm just giving context!), he took SOOOO long and halfway during his explanation, completely serious, i just stared at him and i was like, "That is circular reasoning." and said nothing more. aww man i'm such a bitch, if that comes back as karma on this final... I'LL BE LIKE DAN ON ONE TREE HILL (new addiction- thanks, maddy...).

just had to let you all know. i'm a bitch. but you're the poor suckers reading my blog.

condensation

i didn't want to write a paper today, so i began cleaning out my desk. in anticipation of cleaning out my room, and moving out in 9 days. i came across my greek flash cards. and in front of me i now have a stack 5" x 3" x 3 3/4" of flash cards of every different color and content. nouns, adjectives, declensions, verbs, conjugations.

did you know at one time i wanted to be a preacher? well. i guess i was called to be a preacher. so i decided to study greek. i didn't know you could lose a calling. but you can lose sight of it i guess, or discard it. and now i want to be the chairwoman of the federal reserve...? what happens to all my flash cards and outlines of econ when i change my mind? I have two thoughts going through my head now.

I poured my heart out
it evaporated, see?

my crazy weekend

so... here's the things i can do this weekend (other than study of course)

saturday:
12 p.m. BBQ on the quad, hosted by girl on frisbee team
3 p.m. dying hellions shirts (tie dying!!)
7-ish p.m. Avengers (arena football) game- with a frisbee thing during halftime (yeah, i'm not sure why... but i bought my ticket so i am going to this)
party time p.m.: sam's wine and cheese party (and laura's having a toga party!!! i am so desired!)

sunday:
10 p.m. Edward forty frolf. some of you are familiar with edward forty hands, in which you tape two forties to your hands (1 per hand) and have to drink them. so this one is a nice amalgamation of frolf and edward forty hands. forty in left hand, frisbee in right hand. and we frolf the night away!
after: air frisbee in mudd

so... there are like... finals... and... i'm supposed to like... study for them?

the game of world domination

[i'm approximating these times]

2:00 p.m.: Risk game starts
2:30 p.m.: Scout takes over the green army for me
4:00 p.m.: Scout has to leave
4:01 p.m.: crap that means i'm in charge of the green army
4:30 p.m.: Call John
4:31 p.m.: "So you want me to come over and kick somebody's ass at Risk for you?"
4:32 p.m.: "Yes." -click-
4:35 p.m.: "So... where do you have troops?"
4:36 p.m.: I explain my situation, my goals (and yes everyone else playing them can hear me), John tells me to fortify and go through South America.
6:oo p.m.: Luminaria ceremony
6:30 p.m.: BACK TO RISK!
10:00 p.m.: "I HAVE BEEN TRYING TO CONQUER NORTH AMERICA FOR THE LAST 8 HOURS!!!!"

and somewhere in there i left to hang out with maddy and carly... and i lost north america... and my army was demolished... and i'm a horriblr horrible tactician. Luckily, John said we'd play Risk this summer.... NEXT YEAR BRIT! YOU WATCH YOUR BACK! (and irkutsk!)

opinions?

situation: regionals are in colorado springs, colorado
meaning: it's an 18 hour drive (tops)

situation: my mom doesn't want me driving 18 hours
meaning: is that way controlling?

i don't think it is. i mean, she's a little paranoid and i was looking forward to car trippin' (arizona was 11 hours-- of AWESOMENESS!)... but it does mean i'll get to fly, which will be much more convenient i guess.

i don't know, i was just wondering what you think.

street corner

so yeah, i don't respect myself or my (propagandist) blog anymore. i need to bring the dignity back!! and i will, shortly.

first, i want to say that despite my valiant efforts i sold ONE magazine subscription. to jenn. for vogue. and my mom called to say that she didn't want any magazines, she'd just give the team $40. so prudent!

and here is a prudent-themed story about my mom:

so the summer before senior year we rented an apartment in france and took classes, rode the metro, saw this CRAZY french movie (ask for details, it's to much to type), all those french things you do. and below our apartment, at the end of the street there was this tea shop "les mariages freres" or something like that. and in the display window there were this amazing tea cups! they were glass, and pretty shallow, with a saucer and a handle. it was as if a standard tea cup and a martini glass fell in love... this would be their child.

so i was like, "mom i want those tea cups!" even though, well, really i just liked them a lot. i probably wouldn't use them that much. and she responds,

"well, lindy, they seem impractical given the surface area to volume ratio."

but the best part was probably my response:

"huh. that's true"

and we kept walking. PRUDENCE, I TELL YOU!

now i have a machine gun. ho ho ho.

[this was the email from sam:]

Subject: Yippee-ki-yay, Mr. Brownies!

Hey all-

Here's an extremely late email explaining the situmacation tonight.
6:00 Die Hard begins
7:00 Order Pizza
7:30ish Begin cooking brownies.
7:45 Pizza comes. Pig out.
8:00 so glued to climax of Die Hard that 1st batch of brownies are burned. Eat brownies anyway, with Vanilla ice cream. Begin baking second batch of brownies.
8:15 Begin Die Hard 2: Die Harder (the forgotten sibling)
9:00 Maggie begins to glow from intense happiness
10:15 Die Hard 2 ends. Getting a bit woozy from Die Hard drinking game. Second wave of competitors drops out.
10:30 Die Hard With A Vengeance begins. Samuel L. Jackson kicks ass. Samwise unsuccessfully tries to convince others that he was named after Samuel L.
11:30 Remaining watchers begin to shout instructions to Lieutenant John McClain. McClain realizes: "Dump trucks! 12 giant dump trucks!"
12:00 film races towards conclusion. Remaining Die Hard enthusiasts are too drunk to remember how it ends.
12:30 The world makes sense again.

Cheerio,
Sam

[these were the rules for the drinking game (the ones i can remember):]

#1: "yippee-ki-yay mother f*cker"- chug entire drink
#2: sip for "schnell" (or "simon says" in third movie)
#3: sip when annoying guy dies in first movie (added in the beginning of the first movie... gosh that guy is so annoying)
#4: sip when a terrorist dies
#5: sip for everytime bruce willis shows up bloody in a doorway
#5b: we just sipped whenever bruce willis gets more hurt
#6: explosion- sip for entire duration
#7: sip when ashley laughs inappropriately (she ended up not coming, oh well)
#8: sip for "ants come marching" (for third movie only, and when he solves a puzzle)
#9: sip for "christmas" or a christmas song
#10: i'm sure there were more.... hmm...

things went pretty much according to plan, except for not starting on time. which is why i'm home now at 4 a.m. we also didn't make a second batch. we finished probably around 2 a.m. then we (maggie, scout, marcus, i) went to chano's. maggie and i were completely sober, and were our "best defense" against getting mugged... i love college. i love frisbee. i love my frisbee friends. i hate all the homework i left for tomorrow.

and yes, next year i'm totally doing one of these for the indiana jones trilogy!!!
sip for any appearance of snakes
sip for "dr. jones"
whip- chug entire drink!

it slices, it dices

tonight i hung out with alex. we went to "take back the night" to hear my friend jessica speak (she was awesome!) then we went to commons and had dinner. so yeah, you could hear about it... or you could SEE it! (or at least part of it)

utter triviality

i was having a bad day. but then i hung out with alex and people (carly, tEra, sam, caitlin) at the fountain. that made everything allllll better. except for the fact that i haven't slept since 2:30 a.m...

anyhow, for you usc-er's, it's that time of the semester again! the calm before the storm of finals? oh, no. when the days are getting more and more beautiful, and studying looks less and less appealing? no, guess again. It's that time of the semester between when registration starts and when I get to register for classes. which means at any time during the day, if i feel like procrastinating, I can get online and see what classes are still open. I can make a new schedule, decide to major in art history, go back to econ. the world is full of possibility!

but it's only fair... i'll keep you updated:
Math 125- seats: 75, registered: 0
Core 101- seats: 45, registered: 1
Econ 305- seats: 45, registered: 1
Gender Studies 301- seats: 30, registered: 6 (oh no!!!)
Music 423- seats: 100, registered: 1

kamsas!

lots of fun things happened, and i was like, "ooh this is gonna be such an awesome blog post!" (that is way pathetic, by the way), but I forgot most of them. When I get back we'll go to chano's and i'll tell you alllll about the trip. i'm having fun, but i also have to write a paper.... we'll see how that one goes...

sexual healing

preface: on tuesday, before my core 104 class, my TA overhears a conversation i'm having with jenn (my bfu- best friend usually), in which i said, "that's SO pimp!". we ensue in a discussion of the changing images of 'pimp', etc. etc.)

ok. now for the actual story: today i wasn't feeling very well. and I definitely don't want to be sick for kansas this weekend, so email her:

hey Liz-

I'm not feeling very good today. maybe i'm getting mine for saying "pimp" too much... anyhow, I most likely won't be in class today. hopefully i'll be in discussion tomorrow. Have fun in class!

-lindy

at 1:42 p.m. i receive the following reply:

Hey Lindy-

Thanks for letting me know. Take care and no pimping for you tonight. Email me if you're not going to be in section tomorrow.

Best,
Liz

best. flippin. TA. ever.

i. am. a. nerd.

so maddy puts on her lj, "Ask me three questions. Any three questions you want. I will answer them honestly. Then put this in your journal." and, like any self-respecting and conscientious human and dork, I decide it's high time to administer the Voight-Kampff Test.

with a heavy heart, i now report to you- she is in fact a replicant. and that's sort of a bummer, but we can still be friends. although... now that i've exploited that, i guess it's my turn. so, without further ado:

Ask me three questions. Any three questions you want. I will answer them honestly. Then put this in your journal.

the scene was a small roadside cafe

[door opens, with telltale bell ringing. woman approaches the receptionist]
"Hi... I'd like to, um, check myself in."
"Alright, here, fill out this and I'll need a copy of your insurance card."
"Alright."
"And how long do you plan to be staying with us?"
"How long does it take to be cured?"

[cut to doctor's office. woman sits on examination table swinging her legs anxiously. finally the door opens]
"Hello, Ms. Ligget."
"It's with two t's."
"Oh, I'm so sorry." (doesn't make a note of it on his clipboard, the bastard) "Well, you know why you're here. But could you explain it to me a little more in detail?"

[cut to maddy's room. milanos and dirty laundry are strewn everywhere. a worn beanbag lies in front of the refrigerator. camera pans across to forgotten desk with lonely books, then zooms in on: Felicity Sophomore Year DVD Collection. fade out.]

[doctor's office]
"So that's when I realized we had to stop! I had to get help."
"Yes. I see."
"Just like Greg got help for his cocaine addiction! Or Sean made Julie go see a counselor! Or Noel finally decided to talk to Ben about Ruby's pregnancy! Or, or-"
"PULL YOURSELF TOGETHER WOMAN!"
"I'm- i'm sorry!" (woman breaks down into tears) "It's just... we're up to 6 hours a day now! It's too much for me to handle! All during class, all I can think is, 'Are they watching now? Are they watching without me?' or, 'Is Greg good for Felicity? Will Ben finally profess his undying love to her?' And, doctor, it just eats me alive!!! Cure me, please! I just don't know what to do..." (they sit for a while in silence)
"You know, I always wanted Felicity to end up with Noel. I mean, he's a sweet guy. Look how much Ben always overreacts! Sure, he's the hotter one... but seriously, Noel all the way." (they sit in silence for a while, the doctor waiting for a response)
"Word."
"To your mother."
"And Greg- I don't think he's that bad! When Ben found out about his cocaine addiction, Greg confronted Felicity about it! He was ashamed, but he wouldn't keep it a secret from her! I think he really cares about her. Plus he isn't always trying to get in her pants like David was!"
"Wow- that's true. But Greg keeps on making immature mistakes, like hiring her over the other work-study student. And Felicity has to keep calling him on these things. She deserves someone much better!"
"Yeah, I can see how you think that..."
"And Sean!"
"When will he ever tell Julie how he feels about her!!"
"Right after she stops hooking up with random guys."
"Touche."

and that's about how this week has been.

"Give Me One Reason" (Tracy Chapman)

Give me one reason to stay here and I'll turn right back around
Give me one reason to stay here and I'll turn right back around
Because I don't want to leave you lonely
But you got to make me change my mind

Baby I got your number and I know that you got mine
But you know that I called you, I called too many times
You can call me baby, you can call me anytime
But you got to call me

Give me one reason to stay here and I'll turn right back around
Give me one reason to stay here and I'll turn right back around
Because I don't want to leave you lonely
But you got to make me change my mind

I don't want no one to squeeze me, they might take away my life
I don't want no one to squeeze me, they might take away my life
I just want someone to hold me
And rock me through the night

This youthful heart can love you and give you what you need
This youthful heart can love you and give you what you need
But I'm too old to go chasing you around
Wasting my precious energy

Give me one reason to stay here and I'll turn right back around
Give me one reason to stay here and I'll turn right back around
Because I don't want to leave you lonely
But you got to make me change my mind

Baby just give me one reason, give me just one reason why
Baby just give me one reason, give me just one reason why I should stay
Because I told you that I loved you
And there ain't no more to say

cabaret

what if i took a year off next year... or maybe the next two years... or maybe after sophomore year... and went to foothill. and worked in student ministries (probably volunteer, whatever). and finally figured out what i want to do. i mean, i still like religion (as a major). I like econ. my mom wants me to do engineering, or business. or something. and when i'm chairwoman of the federal reserve i'll need lots of degrees anyhow. and i DO love usc! and i AM happy there... but i like an occasional break. a recess. intermission, if you will.

just thinkin'. ponderin'. entertainin' ideas.

becomes her

i'm a horrible person. seriously. why are you even reading my blog? today i went over to maddy's house three separate times, and made fun of her extensively. chipmunk cheek... chubbins... bloated cheek... this poor girl had her wisdom teeth taken out- AND I PLAN TO EXPLOIT THAT TO THE FULLEST!

i'm sorry, maddy, you know i love you. what can i say? i mean, i've always had a thing for girls with disproportionately large right cheeks. and really, who can blame me? you're hot. and i'm cruel. so deal.

in other news, i went to the dentist today. my brushing is good, but i need to floss more. i still go to the kids dentist. so i got a shiny bracelet for my time there. I also get to watch a movie while they torture me. the nurse brought me into a room with the videos... and it was a hard decision: spongebob or emporer's new groove? I finally went with the latter, at which time the nurse was like, "are you sure?" and drew my attention to the eye-level shelf with other movies: 13 going on 30, dumb and dumber, pieces of april.

psh. as if! get a clue, nurse lady. i can brush my own teeth and pick my own movie! i can also go to bed at 11 pm, because i am MASTER OF MY OWN FATE!

clementines and lil smokies

today was a wonderful day- I went to Monterey! hooray! we (me, john, cousin elizabeth) drove in my mom's convertible and it was a beautiful day! blah blah blah pretty car ride. blah blah blah aquarium and awesome otter paraphenelia blah blah. what REALLY matters are the two breathtaking puns!

pun #1: john and i are at the beach throwing a frisbee. and behind john are a couple on a blanket snuggly-kissy-not-quite-making-out. and so, like any bitter person who isn't getting any herself, i yell, "GET A DUNE!" oh i kill myself!

then we drove to santa cruz for dinner (and dessert!) and, who knows how this happened, we got on the subject of currencies pegged to the dollar (ex: Argentina) that still experience high inflation while the dollar stays relatively stable. exciting- i KNOW!

pun #2: even though i should be making really smart economic comments, all i can think of is "I know Argentinians! they're twins!" and my cousin (this is how i know we're related!) is like, "oh, you mean ArgenTWINians!"

TOUCHE, ELIZABETH! now i'm going to bed because i'm sandy and tired (the true signs of a perfect day). nighty night

teehee

there once was a girl from norcal
she was not exactly nor-mal
now she's on spring break
out to lunch you should her take
and then she will be your best pal

no... that one didn't quite work. oh well. i'm back home. fun fun fun.

ode to colin

what the heck, he doesn't read this blog anyhow. there is a guy, he is really in my writing class, he is really named colin, and he REALLY ROCKS! first off, he's not the guy in the class who relates everything back to bush and how horrible he is. he's not the frat guy who annoys me so much and creeps me out. oh no. he is wonderful. first off, he makes intelligent comments. which is always a plus. he debates, not argues. and his name is colin, that's a cool name. he also plays chess with the people at cafe 84 on wednesday nights! or at least, he did last night. and i now respect him on a much deeper level.

he's also into weight-lifting gym-ness... stuff... ok. i respect that. no i really do that's cool. the weight room scares me! i would only go in there if i were alone and wearing something to disguise my identity. anyhow, i was leaving the gym today and i saw him in the weight room. he was helping someone and what was he wearing, friends? some shirt, GREEN shorts! and... wait for it... high top black chucks. YOU ARE SO FREAKIN COOL, COLIN! i am amazed at your coolness! I can't believe i'm in a class with you!

i was on such a high from the CoolColin sighting that i decided to try a new smoothie at jamba juice (yes it truly was that great)! I got a mango mantra- soooo good! and colin from writing class- soooo awesome!!

night.
